A 5 x 7 envelope, sometimes called an A7, is a standard paper envelope used for mailing or handing out invitations, cards, save-the-dates and more. Though it is a bit bigger than these dimensions, it’s called this because it’s the suitable size for cards and other materials that are five inches by seven inches. So, whenever you’re mailing off a standard card or letter stationery paper, you can be sure that it will fit properly. 5 x 7 envelopes have many uses, so let’s dive into the specifics.

What Types of 5 x 7 Envelopes Are There?

5 by 7 envelopes have a lot of features that make them incredibly useful for a variety of purposes. Read more below.

Types

There are several types of 5 x 7 envelopes, including:

  • Classic, straight flap styles
  • Vertical orientations perfect for announcements and invitations
  • Envelopes with a contour flap for a modern look
  • Window varieties that display card faces

Colors

5 by 7 envelopes are available in a range of colors. They are, however, typically found in a classic white or beige as these are the most widely used and available colors. You can also find 5 x 7 envelopes in a brown paper bag material for a more rustic look. Additionally, there are metallic, glitter, pastel, neon and even envelopes that feature festive prints and designs for the holidays.

Closure

There are three primary seal types for 5 by 7 card envelopes: gum, self seal and flip-and-seal.

Gum is the most traditional seal style. These have a water-soluble gum strip that you lick or apply moisture to.

Self seal envelopes are a popular choice because they’re easy to use and don’t require licking or applying moisture or glue. All you need to do is simply peel off the paper strip and press the flap down onto the already adhesive strip.

Flip-and-seal varieties are designed with strips of latex adhesive both on the top flap and along the open edge of the envelope. So, this type has extra security and is less likely to fall open in transit. It’s a popular choice among businesses.
