Carbonite™ is designed to back you up quickly and easily.

Get started in minutes

With Carbonite, there's no hardware to buy, no cables to connect, no training required. Just install the Carbonite data backup software – it's fast and easy – you don't even have to restart your computer or close anything you're working on.

Backs up while you work

Once you install Carbonite, you'll never have to remember to back up again. The automatic backup runs continually in the background, backing up new and changed files whenever your computer is connected to the Internet. Carbonite is designed to go to sleep when you're using your computer so that it doesn't slow you down. After your initial backup, you shouldn't notice any impact on the performance of your computer or Internet speed.

Makes restoring files fast and easy

With just a few mouse clicks, the Carbonite restore manager guides you through restoring any backed up file to the proper place on your computer.

If you accidentally delete a file or folder, it will remain in your backup for 30 days before being deleted from Carbonite's servers. During this time, you can recover it right from your desktop using the Carbonite application: just find the file(s) or folder(s) in the list of backed up files and click "Restore."

If your computer crashes, is lost or stolen, log in to Carbonite.com from your new or fixed computer and click "Restore". You'll be taken step by step through the process of putting your files back where they belong.

Provides anytime, anywhere access to backed up files

You can open any file in your backup from any computer connected to the Internet, or from your iPhone®, iPad®, Android™, or BlackBerry® smartphone using the free Carbonite Access app.

Carbonite offers free U.S.-based support

Carbonite is designed to be simple and hassle-free, but if you ever have questions, they're ready to help with U.S.-based support representatives available seven days a week via phone, email and live chat.

What is online backup?

Online backup is the process of backing up files remotely online. This is an alternative to backing up files on-site using internal or external hard drives or other devices. Online backup allows you to automatically keep your files backed up on a regular basis.

Why should I consider online backup over other means of data backup?

Computer users have many options when it comes to making copies of their files. Off-line options include computer hard drives, external hard drives, CDs, DVDs, jump drives and more. These all work most of the time for backing up files in case of computer failure.

The main problem with these types of backups is that you have to remember to manually back up your files on a regular basis. Carbonite backs up your files automatically in the background whenever your computer is connected to the Internet so you don't need to remember to back up.

Online backup provides a simple, secure and economical way to protect the files on your computer's hard drive, including photos, digital music and other important documents. If your hard drive crashes, your computer is stolen, you accidentally erase important information from your computer or you otherwise lose access to important files, online backup gives you the ability to quickly restore any lost information.

Is Carbonite online backup secure?

Yes. With Carbonite, your files are encrypted before they leave your computer, with 128-bit Blowfish encryption, and then transmitted over a secure socket layer (SSL) connection, the same data encryption technology used in online banking. Files are stored at Carbonite's state-of-the-art, guarded data centers which protect your data from theft, fire, water damage and anything else that can happen at your home or office.

Carbonite's data centers are temperature controlled and equipped with uninterruptable power supplies (UPS) and on-site emergency backup generators. Personnel access is tightly restricted — biometric scanners and electronic keycards with PIN codes are required for access. And the facilities are guarded 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

What does Carbonite back up?

Carbonite automatically backs up the following types of files in your Users folders:*

PhotosDocumentsEmail*
MusicVideos**Settings

Additional file types and files located outside of your Users folders can be manually added to your backup.

*Any file over 4 GB, including Outlook.PST files, must be manually added to your backup.

**Video files are backed up automatically with the HomePremier, Business and BusinessPremier plans. They can be added to your backup manually with Home or HomePlus.

How much can I back up with Carbonite?

With Carbonite Home plans, there's no limit on your backup space. You get as much space as you need — whether it's 1 GB, 100 GB or more.

The Business plan includes 250 GB of backup space and the BusinessPremier plan includes 500 GB of backup space. Both Business plans allow you to back up an unlimited number of computers. If you need additional space, you can add it to your account at any time.

Can I use Carbonite to back up my external hard drive?

The HomePlus and HomePremier plans allow you to include one external hard drive in your online backup. Both the Business and BusinessPremier plans allow you to back up as many external hard drives as you would like, provided you have enough space available in your plan.

Can I use Carbonite to free up space on my hard drive?

No. Carbonite is online backup – not online storage. It is meant to be a backup of the files that are on your computer – not a place to store files in order to free up space on your hard drive. If you remove a file from your hard drive, Carbonite will wait 30 days for you to recover it, and then will delete that file from their servers, too.

How much does Carbonite cost?

Carbonite offers different plans to meet your backup needs. At the end of your free trial, Carbonite will recommend which plan is best for you:

  • Home — $59/year per computer - Unlimited online backup for your files and folders.
  • HomePlus — $99/year per computer - Unlimited online backup PLUS external hard drive backup and Mirror Image backup.
  • HomePremier — $149/year per computer. Unlimited online backup, external hard drive backup and Mirror Image backup PLUS automatic video backup and Courier Recovery Service.
  • Business — $229/year includes up to 250 GB of backup space for an unlimited number of computers and external hard drives.
  • BusinessPremier — $599/year includes up to 500 GB of backup space for an unlimited number of computers, external hard drives and Windows Servers.

How do I get my files back?

Carbonite makes it easy to get your files back. Whether you need to recover a single file or all your files, the Carbonite restore manager will guide you through the process. Plus, if you're away from your computer and need your files, you can access them from virtually any computer or smartphone.

How much time will it take to get started?

It takes less than 10 minutes to set up your account, install Carbonite and start backing up your files. If you are using Carbonite to back up your small business, it will take another five minutes for each employee to start using it to back up their systems. The initial upload time will depend on the amount of data to be backed up and the Internet speed.

What system requirements are there?

  • High Speed Internet Access
  • Microsoft XP, Vista, Windows 7
  • Apple Intel-based Macs with OS X 10.5, 10.6 or 10.7 (Home, Business and BusinessPremier plans only)
  • Windows Server 2003, 2008 and 2011 (BusinessPremier only)
